Comprehensive Changes in Gene Expression
A new scientific study published in the journal Molecular Nutrition has indicated that regular orange juice consumption alters the activity of thousands of genes in immune cells. Researchers monitored adults who consumed 500 ml of pure pasteurized orange juice daily for two months. Initial findings showed that citrus consumption is not just a simple sugar intake. The study determined that genetic mechanisms at the cellular level are directly related to blood pressure and metabolic processes. Scientists stated that these effects reorganize cellular signals.
Inflammation and Blood Pressure Markers
Laboratory analyses revealed that after the 60-day period, genes associated with inflammation, such as NAMPT, IL6, IL1B, and NLRP3, which are activated during stress, became less active. Furthermore, a significant decrease was recorded in the activity of the SGK1 gene, which affects the kidneys' sodium retention capacity. Experts emphasized that these cellular changes parallel hypotensive effects in young adults. The study findings indicated that regular consumption triggers small biological changes that can contribute to blood vessel relaxation and the calming of inflammation.
Hesperidin and Metabolism
Researchers assessed that hesperidin, a potent citrus flavonoid found in oranges, plays a fundamental role in these antioxidant processes. The data obtained showed that genetic responses varied according to body mass. While more pronounced changes were observed in genes related to fat metabolism in overweight individuals, stronger inflammatory responses were identified in lean participants. A systematic review covering 15 independent controlled studies and a total of 639 participants determined that regular orange juice consumption reduces insulin resistance. In a study examining blood orange juice consumption, an increase in beneficial gut bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids was observed within a month. On the other hand, in a clinical study involving 68 obese participants evaluating vascular endothelial function, improvements were recorded in the ability of blood vessels to dilate and relax. This mechanism was reported to play a protective role in reducing arterial stiffness and heart attack risks.

An investigation conducted on 129 workers at a juice factory in Brazil determined lower concentrations of apolipoprotein B, which is linked to heart attack risk. While experts prioritize consuming the whole fruit due to its fiber content, they stated that pure orange juice contains effects that can alleviate inflammation and support blood circulation in the long term.
