New Roadmap Set for Drinking Water Management

The General Directorate of Water Management shared the results of the Phase 2 project, which aims to protect drinking water sources and modernize treatment facilities, in Ankara.

Water Management Closing Workshop in Ankara

The Closing Workshop of the Phase 2 Project for the Evaluation of Drinking Water Sources and Treatment Facilities, hosted by the General Directorate of Water Management, was held in Ankara. At the meeting, attended by numerous municipal managers, academics, and sector stakeholders, water security was discussed in all its dimensions. The results of inventory studies, water quality monitoring, and facility evaluation activities carried out within the scope of the project were shared in detail. The vital role of inter-institutional coordination and cooperation in protecting water resources constituted the main agenda of the meeting.

New Planning Approach in Water Resources

Stating that important projects are being implemented within the scope of the Water Efficiency Mobilization launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Director of Water Management Afire Sever emphasized that every stage of water is meticulously monitored.

General Director of Water Management Afire Sever explained the fundamental policy of the new era with the following statements:

'We want to contribute to the journey of water. We want to protect every drop. Our goal from now on is planning according to water. A new water management understanding awaits us.'

Comprehensive Safety Strategy from Source to Tap

General Director of Water Management Afire Sever stated that the National Water Information System has been modernized and drew attention to the strategic importance of protecting resources.

Evaluating all stages of the process, General Director of Water Management Afire Sever continued his words as follows:

'The journey of the drop does not end here. It is very valuable for every drop flowing from the tap to be seen as the last drop and consumed accordingly. We call this entire process 'source-to-tap drinking water safety'. The use of technology in the journey of the drop is also included. Finding financial resources for the protection of this drop, its optimization, and communication are also part of it. Resource protection, using technology, establishing and operating facilities, and water pricing are among our important topics.'

Future Water Scarcity and Treatment

Prof. Dr. Erdem Görgün, evaluating the workshop, touched upon the future importance of protecting natural resources and treatment infrastructure.

Emphasizing the importance of legislation and treatment facilities, Prof. Dr. Erdem Görgün made the following assessment:

'In the coming years, we will have to turn less water, in a more polluted state, into safer drinking water. A significant portion of this burden falls on our drinking water treatment facilities. This is exactly where the role of the General Directorate of Water Management comes into play. The 'Regulation on the Quality and Treatment of Waters Supplying Drinking Water', which came into force in 2019, filled a very important gap in this field by bringing surface and groundwater under a single roof.'

Comprehensive Training for Facility Personnel

Within the framework of the project, 17 training modules, video content, and guidebooks were prepared according to the data of the General Directorate of Water Management to increase the professional competence of the technical personnel working in drinking water treatment facilities. Throughout the process, a total of 3 workshops and 1 training seminar were organized, and the draft regulation prepared for the certification of personnel was opened for the opinions of authorized institutions. With these steps taken, the aim is to increase the operational efficiency of treatment facilities and to deliver sustainable, high-standard drinking water to citizens without interruption.
