Field Survey and Scope
A comprehensive field survey was carried out in Afyonkarahisar's Çay district in line with the National Livestock Improvement Project under the 'In the Hands of the People' initiative, coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The work, conducted by technical personnel from the Çay District Agriculture and Forestry Directorate, encompassed the villages of Akkonak, Armutlu, Aydoğmuş, Çayıryazı, Çayırpınar, Devederesi, Eber, Karamık, Koçbeyli, and Pınarkaya. Additionally, livestock operations in the town of Pazarağaç and neighborhoods within the district center were included in the examination.
Future of Local Breeds
The primary objective of the ongoing identification efforts is to document and preserve the genetic resources of the traditional local black cattle breed. Expert teams held direct consultations with breeders, meticulously examining current herd structures, animal pedigree information, and breeding conditions. The field data obtained is planned to directly lay the groundwork for long-term breeding strategies that will enhance productivity in animal production and for future agricultural support policies.
