In an official statement released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), it was reported that 207 cases of salmonella have been identified in an outbreak across the country, with one individual losing their life. Preliminary investigations conducted by the agency suggest that domestic poultry and UK-originating eggs are clean, and the disease is believed to stem from eggs imported into the country. Officials noted that infected individuals consumed the contaminated eggs not in their homes, but in external cafes and restaurants. It was also announced that at least 34 people have been admitted to the hospital for treatment, and two patients developed bloodstream infections.
Outbreak Investigation and Case Details
It was stated that the ages of those affected by the outbreak range widely, from under 1 year old to 90 years old, and epidemiological investigations are ongoing to determine the source of contamination in the food chain. According to UKHSA data, detailed surveys conducted with 114 individuals who fell ill identified five different food establishments that were commonly visited before the onset of symptoms. It is emphasized that salmonella, which manifests with symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea, carries a fatal risk, particularly for young children and individuals with weakened immune systems.
