Machine Harvesting of 7 Local Sesame Varieties Conducted in Bayramiç

In a demonstration study ongoing for three years in Bayramiç, Çanakkale, the machine harvesting of 7 local sesame varieties suitable for mechanical harvesting was successfully completed.

The Demonstration of Local and National Sesame Varieties, coordinated by the Çanakkale Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and conducted in Ağaçköy village of Bayramiç district, has reached its third year. At the field day held on the farm of producer Mutlu Çalık, machine harvesting of 7 local sesame varieties obtained from the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute Directorate was successfully performed. Within the scope of the event, the yield performance of Tan 99, Tanas, Osmanlı 99, Sarısu, Cumhuriyet 99, Orhangazi 99, and Kepsut 99 varieties under the region's climate conditions was examined on-site. Bayramiç District Governor Emrah Bütün, Mayor Hasan Cem Atılgan, Chamber of Agriculture President Mesut Şen, Head of Plant Production and Plant Health Branch Ramazan Eren, and District Agriculture Director İbrahim Çobanoğlu participated in the program.

The trial study, conducted for three years with principles compatible with the transition to organic farming, aims to alleviate the burden of harvesting labor, the largest cost item in sesame farming. By popularizing local and national seeds that are fully compatible with machine harvesting in the region, the goal is to reduce production costs and expand cultivation areas. Officials from the Çanakkale Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry emphasized that sesame holds an indispensable place in the district's traditional agricultural culture. The high-quality product obtained reliably meets the basic raw material needs of the local agriculture-based industry, especially the famous Bayramiç Halva, which holds geographical indication registration.
