Ministry Bans Three Chemical Components Used in Agriculture

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has decided to gradually halt the import, manufacturing, and use of three key active ingredients in agricultural production, citing human health and environmental risks.

The General Directorate of Food and Control of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has made a critical decision regarding three important active ingredients widely used in plant production. According to the official statement, the import, manufacturing, and use of chemical components named 'thiophanate methyl', 'indoxacarb', and 'phosmet' will be gradually phased out across Turkey. With this step, covering a total of 3 active ingredients, the Ministry aims to increase the use of safe inputs in agricultural production. Within the framework of the determined timeline, plant protection products containing the relevant chemicals will be completely withdrawn from the market.

In the reviews conducted by the Ministry, the negative risks of the aforementioned active ingredients on human health and the natural environment were comprehensively evaluated. Throughout the process, international scientific research and the registration and approval status within the European Union were closely considered. The availability of a sufficient number of registered alternative products in agricultural areas where these substances are used became a primary factor in implementing the ban. Thus, the necessary ground was laid for farmers to turn to substitute products without facing hardship in pest control.

According to the published implementation calendar, the first restriction will begin in the foreign trade leg, and the actual import of these products will cease as of November 13, 2026. The factory manufacturing of plant protection products containing the three active ingredients in Turkey will be completely stopped as of December 18, 2026. To allow for the consumption of existing stocks in the field and for producers to complete their transition, actual use in agricultural activities will be permitted until December 31, 2027, after which a full ban will be enforced.
