Erzincan to Feed Eastern Anatolia with Geothermal Greenhouse Farming

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı announced that Erzincan, with its geothermal resources and microclimate, has reached a production capacity capable of meeting the entire vegetable needs of the Eastern Anatolia Region on its own.

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı inspected the geothermal greenhouse areas in Erzincan's Akyazı neighborhood and made important assessments regarding the production vision of the Eastern Anatolia Region. During the visit, attended by Erzincan Governor Hamza Aydoğdu and protocol members, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı emphasized the importance of the city's microclimate and geothermal resources, stating:

According to data shared by the Ministry, Turkey ranks fourth globally and second in Europe in terms of protected cultivation capacity. Minister Yumaklı announced that greenhouse areas have increased by 44% in the last 24 years, reaching 789,000 decares, and that 8.3 million tons of vegetables and 1 million tons of fruit are produced annually in greenhouses. Vegetables are grown on 92% of the protected cultivation lands across Turkey, fruits on 7%, and ornamental plants on 1%, thereby securing food supply security.

Yumaklı highlighted the importance of modern agricultural technologies in the face of climate change and geopolitical fluctuations, citing the 30-decare geothermal greenhouse complex in Akyazı as an example. It was noted that this modern facility provides a harvest equivalent to the soil-based production in 90 decares of open fields using traditional methods. Minister Yumaklı stated that thanks to geothermal energy, production continues uninterrupted even in winter conditions, and that the high yield per unit area directly contributes to the regional economy and farmer incomes, while significantly reducing costs.

It was announced that the Indoor Plant Production Registration System will be implemented in the new season to increase production planning and global competitiveness. Minister Yumaklı called on all producers to join this system, stating that processes that cannot be registered and measured cannot be managed effectively. Reminding that incentives and support will be optimized through this system, Yumaklı added that they aim to elevate Turkey's success in the global greenhouse league to higher levels in cooperation with local administrations and producers.
