Middle East Tensions Escalate Producer Costs in China
· AA Tarım & Ekonomi

Shipment disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and rising global energy prices pushed China's producer prices up 3.8% year-on-year in August, intensifying cost pressures.
War Pressure on Producer Prices
According to data released by China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the Producer Price Index (PPI) showed a year-on-year increase of 3.8% in August. As tensions in the Middle East escalated global energy and input costs, the PPI, after falling 1.4% in January and 0.9% in February, had risen 0.5% in March, 2.8% in April, 3.9% in May, 4.1% in June, and 3.5% in July. Thus, the index has entered a strong cost increase cycle again, following the annual decline series of 3% in 2023, 2.2% in 2024, and 2.6% in 2025.
Upward Trend in Consumer Inflation
The country's Consumer Price Index (CPI) also recorded a year-on-year increase of 0.8% in August, influenced by rising energy and input costs. According to NBS data, after increasing by 0.2% in January, the CPI reached a three-year high of 1.3% in February, then rose 1% in March, 1.2% in April, 1.2% in May, 1% in June, and 0.5% in July. This rise followed a period of stagnation with a 0.2% increase in 2023 and 2024, and remaining flat at 0% in 2025.
Strait of Hormuz and Fertilizer Supply
The Strait of Hormuz, experiencing disruptions in shipping traffic due to escalating military tensions in the Persian Gulf, directly impacts global commodity and agricultural input markets. The region serves as a transit route for approximately 25% of the world's oil trade, 20% of liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade, and nearly 30% of global fertilizer trade. These supply disruptions in China, which imports about 45% of its oil and 30% of its LNG through this strait, are creating upward pressure on production costs and raw material prices.
