Sunflower Price of 40 Lira Fails to Save Producers

Experts highlight rising production costs and ballooning import bills, stating that even a 40 lira purchase price for sunflowers with 40% oil content will be insufficient.

Prof. Dr. Okan Gaytancıoğlu, a faculty member at Trakya University's Faculty of Agriculture, stated in Edirne that a purchase price of 40 lira for sunflowers with 40% oil content will be insufficient for producers, emphasizing the need for direct farmer support against rapidly increasing production costs.

Pointing to the fact that not supporting domestic production is widening the foreign trade deficit, according to data shared by Prof. Dr. Okan Gaytancıoğlu, $756 million was paid for sunflower imports and $1.1 billion for crude sunflower oil imports in the January-June period of 2026, bringing the total import bill to approximately $1.86 billion.
