Producers in Isparta Pivot to Low-Cost Greengage Plums

In Eğirdir, Isparta, greengage plums are emerging as a strong alternative for producers, offering lower input costs and higher yields compared to apples.

Cengiz Acar, a 57-year-old producer who has been engaged in agriculture for about 20 years in Mahmatlar village of Eğirdir district in Isparta, has included greengage plums in his product range alongside apples and peaches. Acar, who has introduced an alternative to the traditional fruit production in the region, stated that greengage plums, which can be grown with much lower input costs compared to apples, provide high yields under suitable climatic conditions. Greengage plums are becoming a promising option for farmers in the region seeking alternative products, with their yield and market potential.

Producer Cengiz Acar emphasized that the type of tree preferred in greengage plum production directly determines the yield and shared the following information regarding the harvest potential:

Sharing the information that an average of 40-60 trees can be planted per decare, Acar stated that approximately 10 tons of harvest can be achieved from one decare of land if maintenance and climatic conditions are favorable, thus quantifying the high return potential of the product.

Cengiz Acar detailed the annual cultivation process of greengage plums, saying that the trees are pruned in March and then enter the flowering period. The producer stated that after the flowers fall, pea-sized fruits begin to form on the branches, and the fruits ripen regularly until August. Acar noted that the harvest process starts at the end of August and continues uninterrupted until the end of September, emphasizing the critical importance of the fruit's ripening stage on the branch.

Cengiz Acar stated that the microclimate and natural conditions around Lake Eğirdir give the cultivated fruits a unique aroma, noting that the geographical structure enhances fruit quality. Acar stressed the necessity of educating farmers on fertilization, pest control, and modern cultivation techniques, and said that technical support and practical training should be increased regarding which fertilizer and pesticide to apply, when, and in what quantity for which product to increase agricultural productivity.
