Record Earnings Per Decare in Avocado Production
Avocado, which years ago was left to rot on trees due to a lack of market and commercial value, has now transformed into the most profitable income stream for producers. Amidst increasing climate pressures and yield losses in traditional agricultural products, farmers are achieving incomes of 400,000 TL per decare through avocado cultivation. As consumption rapidly climbs in both global and domestic markets, current supply is insufficient to meet demand. This product, which has created a multi-billion dollar agricultural exchange in Turkey and other populous countries worldwide, presents a significant alternative for producers who have found little success with traditional farming.
Global Demand Explosion Originating in India
Avocado, planted in India about 15 years ago solely to provide shade for coffee plantations, was known as 'dog fruit' due to its lack of commercial value in the region. The product's fate underwent a radical change in 2011 when Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty announced her use of avocado in skincare. Following this promotion, the product's price rapidly multiplied. While domestic production remained at 8-9 thousand tons, imports surged up to 15 thousand tons to meet the rising domestic demand.
