Turkey Turns to Imports as Global Meat Market Shifts

China's additional tariffs on beef imports are altering the global red meat market balance, pushing export giants towards alternative routes, while Turkey grapples with rising costs and seeks imports.
China Slowdown in Global Meat Market
China's quota and additional tariff sanctions on beef, implemented in 2026, have completely shifted the balance in the global red meat trade. According to announced data, Australia's shipments to the Chinese market fell by 79% in July, down to 6,458 tons. Similarly, despite Brazil's sales dropping by half, global meat prices have increased. Australia and Brazil quickly compensated for these losses by opening up to the US and Japanese markets.
Import Preference Instead of Export Opportunity
While major exporting countries focus on alternative markets during times of crisis, Turkey continues its search for breeding stock and live animal imports from countries like Paraguay. It appears that the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has not sufficiently analyzed the transformations in global markets, and breeders have not been prepared for foreign markets. High feed costs and an unplanned production structure make it difficult for producers to compete in the international arena, while sector representatives demand urgent breeding improvement, feed support, and a comprehensive national strategy.
Production Yield and Increasing Input Burden
According to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations data, Turkey ranks as the world's sixth-largest agricultural economy with an agricultural production value of $92 billion. However, this total recorded production value does not reflect the real welfare of the producers on the ground. After deducting costs for diesel, fertilizer, feed, medicine, energy, labor, and financing, the net profit remaining in the farmer's hands remains at very low levels, and the producer's income loss deepens with each season.
