New Food Logo Application to Start in School Canteens

The School Food Logo, prepared in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of National Education, and the Ministry of Health, will be implemented on September 14; the consumption of 18 million students in canteens will be strictly monitored.

School Food Logo Goes into Effect

The 'School Food Logo' application, prepared through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of National Education, and the Ministry of Health, will officially be implemented as of September 14. This important project, supported by the Turkish Kidney Foundation, had been postponed for various reasons previously. The system, which comes into effect with the start of the new academic year, covers the direct food consumption of approximately 18 million students across Turkey. Thanks to the regulation, the compliance of packaged products offered in canteens with the determined official nutritional criteria will be monitored much more closely.

Foods Banned for Sale in Canteens

Within the framework of the new legislation, many ready-made and processed foods that could negatively affect children's health will be completely excluded from school canteens. Accordingly, the sale of carbonated and cola drinks, energy drinks, flavored beverages, chips, fried foods, chocolate, and candies will be strictly prohibited. Simultaneously, cakes with cream and chocolate fillings, biscuits, pastries, syrupy desserts, çiğ köfte, and products containing artificial sweeteners will be excluded from school food offerings and removed from shelves.

Healthy Nutrition and Consumption Standards

With the application, clear limits will be set for sugar, salt, and saturated fat content in packaged foods, and products exceeding these criteria will not be approved for sale. Turkish Kidney Foundation Dietitian Gökçen Efe Aydın states that even if the salt content appears low, cracker-type foods should not be present in canteens and emphasizes the importance of encouraging fresh fruit consumption instead of packaged fruit juices. The sale of nutritious foods that fully comply with the new standards will continue in canteens under controlled conditions.
