Red Meat Prices Push Consumers Towards Chicken

Soaring red meat prices, reaching up to 1490 Turkish Lira in Ankara's wholesale markets, have shifted consumer interest to rapidly depleting white meat sections.
Red Meat Prices Stay on Shelves
Observations made at wholesale markets in Ankara over the weekend clearly illustrated the price gap in the meat market and changing consumption preferences. While minced meat, offered at a discount, was sold at 775 TL per kilogram, bone-in lamb neck was priced at 850 TL and lamb chops at 1490 TL. The fattier variety of diced meat reached the 800 TL band, with a medium-fat version hitting the 1000 TL mark. Due to high costs, the full 8-10 meter red meat displays struggled to find buyers.
Consumers Flock to White Meat Sections
Faced with the increase in red meat prices, citizens showed intense interest in white meat sections, which offer a more economical alternative. Whole chickens sold at 99 TL per kilogram and chicken fillet products, priced between 160 and 165 TL per kilogram, were quickly depleted. Chicken drumsticks, set at 140 TL per kilogram, were also among the high-demand items, indicating that consumers with lower incomes are shifting their animal protein preference to poultry.
