Veterinarian Adnan Büyükvural, speaking in information shared by the Niğde Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, stressed that the quality of colostrum, critical in calf nutrition, cannot be understood solely by its external appearance. Adnan Büyükvural recommended the use of a Brix refractometer for practical on-site measurement, stating that values of 22% and above indicate quality colostrum. While the protective properties of colostrum are directly dependent on the mother's vaccination history, it is essential for the newborn calf to receive this milk in a timely, sufficient, and clean manner.
Correct Storage and Thawing Rules
Veterinarian Adnan Büyükvural stated that excess quality colostrum should never be sold and recommended writing the freezing date, cow number, and Brix value on sterile portions. Büyükvural advised thawing frozen milk using the bain-marie method to avoid damaging its delicate protein structure, emphasizing that the water temperature should be kept between 40-50 degrees Celsius and the colostrum must be given to the calf at body temperature.
