New Two-Year Wave of Rising Global Food Prices
· Sabah Ekonomi

The World Bank forecasts global food prices to surge 18% over two years, while escalating costs are forcing nearly half of U.S. consumers to skip meals.
Rising Inflation Alters Consumption Habits
Escalating food prices across the United States have begun to directly shake the daily dietary patterns of households. Recent public opinion surveys document that approximately half of American consumers are now forced to skip meals due to increasing grocery bills. Particularly, low and middle-income families are viewing food budget cuts as a primary saving method in the face of rising rent and energy costs. Consumers are shifting towards cheaper alternatives in their shopping carts and trying to resist the cost of living crisis by reducing portion sizes. This decline in consumption habits strikingly summarizes the societal impacts of food inflation.

World Bank Issues Global Price Warning
According to projections shared by the World Bank, global food prices are expected to rise by 10% in 2026 and by 7% in 2027. The institution forecasts the total two-year increase to reach the 18% mark, while predicting a 32% rise in energy prices and a 23% increase in overall commodities. Rising fuel and chemical fertilizer expenses are multiplying the cost burden of agricultural production, pushing up final consumer prices. The report also states that maritime shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, following tensions between the U.S. and Iran, have severely shaken the supply chain.
