Joint Inspection Operation Against Counterfeit Food in Balıkesir

The 'Food Safety-1' operation, launched across Balıkesir under the coordination of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Interior, conducted simultaneous inspections targeting counterfeit and adulterated products.

Within the scope of the Food Safety-1 operation, implemented under the cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Interior, extensive inspections were carried out across Balıkesir. Teams from the Provincial Directorates of Agriculture and Forestry, Police Departments, and Gendarmerie Commands acted jointly in field operations conducted simultaneously in the city center and districts. This operation, launched under the coordination of public institutions to ensure consumers' access to compliant and healthy food, aims to eliminate all risky links in the food chain.

The focus of the inspection activities was the fight against counterfeit, imitation, and adulterated food products that directly threaten consumer health. Inspection teams, acting on risk analysis, meticulously checked businesses that produce, process, and market products with a high probability of imitation and adulteration. During the inspections, not only the physical conditions of production facilities and business records but also the compliance documents of products offered for sale at retail points were examined in detail.

During the controls, emphasis was placed on basic food products carrying the risk of adulteration. Olive oil, milk and dairy products, meat and meat products, spices, and food supplements were among the priority inspection areas for the teams. In addition, local products such as honey, molasses, and olive oil sold on roadsides and in open stalls were also inspected by the teams. All processes of these foods, from production to reaching the consumer, were scrutinized within the framework of legal regulations.

Official samples were taken from food items suspected of violating regulations during inspections conducted by field teams for analysis. The collected samples were sent to accredited food laboratories to determine product content and identify any harmful components to human health. While non-compliance detected during controls was immediately documented, it was reported that legal and administrative sanctions were resolutely applied by authorized units against businesses operating in violation of regulations.

In the operation carried out, a modern inspection approach based directly on product risk was applied, rather than treating all businesses with the same standard. This method focused on product groups with a high potential to threaten public health and businesses with a history of non-compliance in past inspections. The risk-based inspection model was effectively implemented in the field to prevent consumer deception, remove fraudulent products from the market, and support businesses that produce in compliance with the law.

It was emphasized that food inspections not only protect public health but also aim to protect the rights of honest producers in the sector. The goal is to prevent farmers and businesses that produce in compliance with standards from losing market share to underground producers who reduce costs through fraudulent means. Officials from the Balıkesir Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry made the following statements regarding the issue:

It was stated that the joint inspection mobilization launched across Balıkesir will continue in the coming period, covering different product and business categories. The effectiveness of this inspection model, which combines the technical knowledge of the agricultural organization with the field support of security forces, continues to yield concrete results in the field. Officials announced to the public that inspections will continue uninterruptedly to prevent the market release of counterfeit and adulterated products and to protect consumer confidence.
