Ministry of Agriculture Exposes Firms Producing Adulterated Honey

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's updated adulteration and counterfeiting list revealed the presence of glucose and sugar syrup in a widely sold flower honey brand, identified as containing fake ingredients.

Ministry Exposes Counterfeit Honey

As part of its efforts to protect food safety, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry updated its list of adulterated and counterfeit products on August 20, 2026. The latest list, published on the Ministry's official internet portal, featured the Abalı brand of strained flower honey, which has a wide distribution network in online sales platforms and supermarkets. The product, with an expiry date of 12/09/2027 and belonging to Hastürk Gıda Otomotiv İnşaat Emlak Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. and Vahit Yıldız Balsu, operating in Ankara's Akyurt district, was confirmed to be counterfeit.

Details and Methods of Adulteration

Laboratory analyses revealed that the honey product in question contained glucose and sugar syrup instead of natural ingredients. The Ministry's report classified the type of fraud as 'Addition of Substance Not Possessing the Same Value'. The addition of fructose or starch-based sweeteners to genuine honey to increase volume transforms a product intended for health benefits into a low-quality syrup. The adulteration of the product, heavily marketed on popular e-commerce sites and the company's own website, has been definitively confirmed.

Inspection Call and Reporting

Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry emphasized the critical importance for citizens to regularly check the portal at guvenilirgida.tarimorman.gov.tr when making food purchases. It was announced that market inspections would continue uninterrupted to prevent consumer deception. Officials reiterated their call for consumers to promptly report any suspicious and fraudulent food products encountered on market shelves or digital platforms to the ALO 174 Food Hotline.
