Baking Soda Wash and Scrub Recommended Against Pesticide Residues

Experts emphasize that mechanical scrubbing, in addition to soaking in baking soda water, is essential for removing pesticide residues from fruits and vegetables.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kaan Yılancıoğlu's pesticide removal guide, the alkaline structure of sodium bicarbonate solution causes chemical degradation of pesticides on the surface of fruits and vegetables. It is recommended to soak the produce in a baking soda water solution for 10 to 15 minutes to ensure chemical dissolution and surface purification.

It is stated that baking soda water does not completely eliminate agricultural chemicals but merely loosens their bonds on the surface. Experts emphasize that pesticides adhering to the natural or artificial waxy layer on the outer skin of fruits and vegetables cannot be removed by mere soaking in water, and that mechanical scrubbing of the produce is necessary to completely remove the dissolved chemical residues from the food.
