The harvest season has begun for the 'Sealed Ipsala Melon,' cultivated using heirloom seeds and dry farming methods for three generations in Ankara's Sincan district. This local variety, grown entirely without irrigation on arid lands, stands out with its unique intense aroma and thin rind. The product, in high demand in the capital's market, is among the region's most deep-rooted agricultural heritages.
Melon producer Uğur Çay shared the following information about the production process and product characteristics:
In the ongoing harvest process on the arid lands of the Sincan plains, a yield of approximately 625 kilograms per decare is targeted this year. While the internal color of the melons, ripened in dry soil without irrigation, is striking with its orange hues, the low acid content makes the product attractive to consumers. According to information shared by producer Uğur Çay, a total yield of around 50 tons is planned from the 80-decare production area. The heirloom seed, perfectly adapted to the region's soil structure, manages to maintain its yield and quality despite challenging drought conditions.
The produce, harvested from the fields by tractors, is put up for sale at the melon market in the Yenikent neighborhood of Sincan district. Ömer Kılıç, a melon producer bringing products to the market, described the harvest and sales process with the following words:
