Russian Wheat Remains Cheapest Option Amid Rising Logistics Risks Driving Prices Higher
· Tarım Pusulası

Logistical disruptions in the Black Sea and Azov basins, coupled with escalating freight costs, are hindering access to Russian wheat, the nominally cheapest option, triggering sharp rallies in global futures markets.
Price Surge in Global Wheat Exchanges
Global wheat markets have exhibited a strong upward trend since the beginning of September. According to a market analysis published by AgroExpert on September 9, Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) December wheat futures contracts saw an approximate 12% increase over the past month. In the European market, price hikes reached 13%. As of the September 9 trading session, the CBOT SRW December 2026 contract was priced at 747 cents/bushel, Kansas HRW at 813.25 cents/bushel, and Euronext/MATIF wheat at 240.75 euros/ton.
Significant Price Gap at FOB Levels
Despite the sharp rally in global futures markets, Russian wheat continues to be the nominally cheapest option in the international market. Data from AgroExpert shows that as of September 9, Russian wheat with 12.5% protein was trading at $210-220/ton FOB, with the Black Sea wheat index at $227.3/ton. In contrast, Ukrainian wheat is sold at $220-225/ton, Argentinian at $258/ton, Romanian at $288/ton, and French at $289/ton. U.S. origin wheats range up to $310/ton for SRW and $341/ton for HRW.
Port Shipment Risks Increase Actual Costs
The low indicative price of Russian wheat at Black Sea ports does not directly reflect the final cost for buyers. Security concerns related to maritime transport in the Azov and Black Sea basins, along with pauses in terminal operations, are increasing the risks of physical delivery. This situation is prompting buyers to seek alternative ports due to higher freight and insurance premiums. Consequently, while the nominal price at the port of Novorossiysk stands at $210/ton, the FOB price for 12.5% protein wheat at the Baltic Sea port of Vysotsk is climbing to $263/ton.
Significant Drop in Export Volume and Duties
Logistical challenges have directly impacted Russia's export figures. According to SovEcon's analysis, Russian wheat exports for September are expected to be around 2 million tons, compared to 4.6 million tons in the same period last year. Rusagrotrans has announced a September forecast of 1.75 million tons. Exports from July to September have fallen from 11.3 million tons to 5.6 million tons. Furthermore, the wheat export duty for the September 9-15 period increased to 1,179.3 rubles per ton, while domestic market prices, as reported by farmer Nikita Tokmakov, range between 5.2 thousand and 10.4 thousand rubles per ton depending on the region.
Logistical Disruptions Reshaping Trade Flows
According to AgroExpert's assessment, current market movements are driven not only by harvest yields and stock levels but directly by disruptions in export logistics. Although Black Sea origin wheat appears cheaper, shipment risks are pushing buyers towards products from the European Union, North America, and Australia, requiring them to pay higher premiums. The approximate 18% rise in continuous CBOT contracts over the past month is a clear indicator of this trend. Moving forward, the trajectory of Black Sea shipments and the Baltic route will determine the global grain price balance.
