Global grain prices fall 4.5% in October

Global grain prices dropped 4.5% month-on-month in October, driven by weakening demand and easing Black Sea shipment expectations, according to FAO data. Wheat and corn prices led the decline, while rice prices continued to rise due to supply constraints.

Sharp October Drop in Cereal Index

Global grain prices reversed their upward trend in October after months of increases, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO Cereal Price Index fell by 4.5% compared to September, reaching 116.8 points. This figure represents a decrease of 13.1 points compared to the same month last year. The decline in prices was primarily driven by weakening global demand and market expectations that restrictions on grain shipments from the Black Sea region could be eased.

Supply Easing for Wheat and Corn

World wheat prices recorded their first decline in October after four consecutive months of increases. Demand stagnation from importing countries and positive production forecasts in Argentina pulled prices down, although logistical challenges limited the extent of the fall. Corn prices, after reaching a three-year high in September, declined as the new US harvest entered the market. Expectations of high-volume shipments from South America and a potential de-escalation of geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea increased pressure on corn prices. Barley and sorghum prices also fell amid strong harvest forecasts in Australia.

Rice: The Only Product Maintaining an Upward Trend

While a general decline dominated the international grain markets, rice bucked the trend and gained value. The FAO All Rice Price Index increased by 1.6% in October compared to the previous month. Adverse weather conditions affecting major exporting countries, which delayed harvests, directly contributed to this price increase for rice. Additionally, rising agricultural production costs tightened global rice supply, leading to upward price movements.
