Local Sesame Varieties Meet Producers in Canakkale

Seven local sesame varieties, developed to meet the raw material needs of the geographically indicated Bayramiç Tahini Halva, were presented to producers at an agricultural fair.
Local Sesame Push in Bayramiç
The Çanakkale Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry introduced 7 local sesame varieties, grown in a demonstration area established in Ağaçköy to support the production of the geographically indicated Bayramiç Tahini Halva, at the Bayramiç Agriculture and Technologies Fair. The Official from the Çanakkale Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry stated the objectives of the study as follows:
'To show our farmers the products of our sesame demonstration consisting of domestic and national seeds developed by institutes affiliated with our Ministry.'
The products, whose field development was exhibited ahead of the upcoming harvest, were met with great interest by farmers and sector representatives in the region.
Varieties Suitable for Mechanical Harvesting
The biggest advantage of the Cumhuriyet 99, Osmanlı 99, Tan 99, Sarısu, Tanas, Orhangazi 99, and Kepsut 99 varieties, bred by the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute, is their suitability for mechanical harvesting. The success of the trial plantings, carried out on the land of producer Mutlu Çalık under the supervision of the Çanakkale Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, was shared at the fair. The Provincial Directorate invited producers to a Field Day event, which will be organized soon with a harvest, to see the field results on-site.
From Field to Table Production Process
Producer Mutlu Çalık, providing information about the planting calendar and development process, summarized the process as follows:
'This is our product, which is still greener, that we brought to get the same yield by planting seven varieties of sesame given to me by the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry separately in the same field. We plant in the field on May 25th. We keep it in the field for one hundred and thirty days.'
Touching upon the post-harvest stages, Mutlu Çalık shared the following information:
'We harvest after one hundred and thirty days, and then we let it dry. After separating the mother plant by winnowing, we proceed to other activities to make tahini.'
Emphasizing the importance of the institutional support provided, producer Mutlu Çalık completed his goals with the following words:
'With the support given to us. With the authority given to us, to produce this and multiply it further.'
