Major Leap in Global Chicken Production
The poultry sector, one of the fastest-growing segments of the modern food industry, has reached historic levels in production figures. According to data shared by The Financial Times, the number of chickens produced globally rose from 48.3 billion in 2006 to 76.2 billion as of 2023. Nan-Dirk Mulder, a global poultry specialist at Rabobank, emphasizes that global growth in the sector has significantly accelerated in the last three to four years, making it nearly impossible to find a market where consumption is declining today.
Demand for Affordable Protein Fuels Sector Growth
Poultry meat, once considered an expensive food item in the past century, has transformed into the most preferred source of animal protein today due to its economic accessibility. This immense momentum in consumption necessitates the establishment of new hatcheries, modern poultry farms, feed mills, processing lines, and refrigerated logistics fleets. Glynn Tonsor, an Agricultural Economist at Kansas State University and Manager of the Meat Demand Monitor, highlights the increasing demand:

Avian Influenza and Facility Establishment Challenges
The industrial production model, aiming to meet growing consumer demand, brings with it significant environmental and sanitary risks. Avian influenza outbreaks, spreading globally, directly disrupt production lines as well as live animal and meat trade between countries. Furthermore, increasing environmental pollution concerns, bureaucratic obstacles in zoning permits, and public opposition are making the establishment of new integrated farms and processing centers, which the livestock sector requires, an increasingly challenging process.
