Child Dies in Italy After Consuming Raw Milk Cheese

A child in Italy, who fell into a coma in 2017 after contracting an E. coli infection from raw milk cheese, has lost their nine-year battle for life.
Mattia Maestri, who contracted an E. coli infection after consuming cheese produced from raw milk in Trento, Italy, in 2017, has died. The child, who developed Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) following the infection, had been fighting for life in a coma for approximately nine years.
Maestri, whose consciousness remained closed for nine years following the food safety-related incident, died at the age of 13.
