Beet Sugar and HFCS Compared at PANFEST

Experts discussed the effects of beet sugar and starch-based sweeteners on human health and nutrition within the scope of PANFEST, organized by Kayseri Şeker.

Beet Sugar Panel at PANFEST

Within the scope of PANFEST, organized by Kayseri Şeker from September 1-3, the place of beet sugar, starch-based sugars, and high-intensity sweeteners in human nutrition was comprehensively addressed. Prof. Dr. Şebnem Harsa, a faculty member of the Food Engineering Department at İzmir University of Economics and Technology, who was a speaker at the panel, emphasized that beet sugar and starch-based sugars are structurally different. Within the framework of the event, the strategic importance of beet sugar, obtained from natural agricultural sources, in the food chain and consumer perception compared to industrial sweeteners were detailed.

Fructose Consumption and Metabolic Effects

Prof. Dr. Kürşat Gündoğan, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, drew attention to the effects of high fructose consumption on gut microbiota and the liver. Stating that starch-based sugars have found a larger place in the food system since the 1970s, Prof. Dr. Kürşat Gündoğan made the following assessment:

"How carbohydrates are consumed and from which foods they are consumed is very important."

Experts stated that the source of carbohydrates is decisive for the energy needs of cells and the brain, and emphasized the importance of consuming natural products.
