Critical Feed Crisis in Southern Germany
The drought and feed supply shortage emerging in southern Germany are forcing cattle farmers into decisions of mandatory herd reduction. Significant disruptions in the supply of roughage and succulent feed are being experienced, particularly in the states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, ahead of the winter season. According to data from the Baden-Württemberg Farmers' Association, winter feed stocks held by producers in the region are 30-40% below seasonal averages. The insufficient growth of plant biomass in pastures is driving up hay costs, compelling livestock farmers to take urgent measures.
Congestion at Slaughterhouses and Price Volatility
Faced with increasing feeding costs, producers are primarily starting to dispose of older cows. In regions like Esslingen and Reutlingen, up to 15% of the cattle population has been directly directed to slaughter. The congestion at regional slaughterhouses has also impacted the meat market. The German Cattle and Pig Producers' Association (VEZG) reported that carcass prices have stabilized at €5/kg due to the increased supply of cull cows. Conversely, prices for young male and female cattle, facing restricted supply, have risen by 10 euro cents to €6.2/kg.
Producers' Demands and Expectations
Industry representatives are closely monitoring the course of autumn rainfall to navigate this critical period, noting that herd liquidations may continue if the drought persists. Agricultural organizations, calling for urgent government support to close the feed deficit, are demanding immediate permission to produce hay on fallow and unused agricultural land. The prevailing drought conditions across Europe continue to shake not only crop production but also the winter sustainability of the livestock sector and the balance of roughage supply.
