Public Institutions Convene in Ankara to Prevent Food Waste

Ministries and public institutions, coordinated by the General Directorate of Food and Control, have set a roadmap to prevent losses in the supply chain from farm to table.

Mobilization to Prevent Farm-to-Table Losses

Representatives from the Presidential Agricultural and Food Policies Council, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the Ministry of Trade, TÜİK, the Central Bank, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Family and Social Services, and the Ministry of National Education attended the meeting held in Ankara, hosted by the General Directorate of Food and Control. It was stated during the meeting that waste should be addressed not only at the consumption stage but throughout the entire supply chain from farm to table. The goal is to develop models that reduce losses from production planning to logistics, storage, and points of sale, and to expand food banking.

Billions of Tons of Waste Globally Each Year

According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, approximately 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted globally each year. This global loss means that one in nine people worldwide struggles with hunger daily, and over 25,000 children die from malnutrition. FAO data indicates that 631 million tons, constituting 60% of the waste, occur directly in households. 28% of food available for consumption is wasted in the service sector, and 12% at the retail stage.
