Bean Named 2026's Poisonous Plant

The Wandsbek Botanical Garden in Germany has declared the common bean, which can cause severe poisoning when consumed raw, as the poisonous plant of 2026.

In a notable decision at the 21st traditional vote organized by the Wandsbek Botanical Garden in Germany, the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), widely consumed globally and in Turkish cuisine, was selected as the poisonous plant of 2026 due to the toxicity risks associated with its raw consumption.

Beans contain a lectin protein called 'phasin', which protects the plant from natural pests. This toxin, which remains active when not heat-treated, can cause red blood cells to clump, disrupting circulatory balance. While raw or undercooked consumption leads to nausea, severe vomiting, and intestinal discomfort, experts warn that even consuming 5-6 raw beans can trigger serious poisoning in children.
