Global Food Prices Hit Highest Level Since Late 2022

Global food prices rose 1.9% in August to their highest level in the recent period, driven by sharp increases in sugar and wheat, according to FAO data.
Peak Levels in Global Prices
According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), global food prices reached their highest level in August since the end of 2022. The FAO Food Price Index recorded a 1.9% increase compared to the previous month. The annual increase rate in global food prices was calculated at 2.5%. While these developments occurred globally, food inflation in Turkey stood at 33.4% during the same period.
Geopolitical and Climate Pressures in Markets
Global food markets are under pressure from rising production costs, trade disruptions, and risks stemming from climate conditions. The renewed escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine since mid-July has directly impacted grain markets by making it difficult for Ukrainian producers to export grains. Furthermore, weakening expectations for negotiations between the US and Iran, and the anticipated low harvest in Europe increasing import needs, have accelerated global supply competition.
Sharp Increases in Sugar and Wheat
Price movements on a commodity basis were particularly pronounced in key products in August. According to FAO data, global wheat prices increased by 2.6% on a monthly basis. The sugar market experienced a much sharper climb, with sugar prices rising by 11.9% during the same period. These rapid price movements in grains, dairy products, and sugar were the main factors driving the global food index upwards.
