Olive Oil Adulteration Claim of 10 Billion Lira on the Agenda

It is claimed that 50,000 tons of adulterated products are sold annually in the Turkish olive oil market, creating an unregistered volume of 10 billion lira.

Economic Dimension of Adulterated Products in the Market

Striking data has emerged regarding the sale of approximately 50,000 tons of adulterated products annually in the Turkish olive oil market. This figure, shared with the public by Mustafa Kürlek, Chairman of the Young Entrepreneurs Board of the Ayvalık Chamber of Commerce, points to an unregistered market volume of 10 billion Turkish Lira when calculated at 200 lira per kilogram. Turkey's olive oil production for the 2025-2026 season is estimated to be around 290,000 tons. Considering this projection, the alleged 50,000 tons of fraudulent products correspond to approximately 17% of the total expected harvest. Although the relevant monetary amount does not constitute an official determination, it reveals the dangerous extent of unfair competition within the sector.

Exploitation of the Ayvalık Brand with Fake Labels

The misuse of geographical reputation constitutes another significant dimension of the adulterated olive oil trade. The name of Ayvalık, one of the most prestigious centers of olive oil production in the country, is heavily exploited in the marketing of fraudulent products entering the market. Sector representatives based in Ayvalık draw attention to various counterfeit brand methods developed to mislead consumers. Specifically, fake addresses and statements like 'Ayvalık, 4th Kilometer' are printed on labels, creating the impression that production occurs in a registered region. Local producers strongly emphasize that these misleading advertisements, which directly damage the perception of quality in olive oil, cause severe commercial damage to genuine producers.
