Bursa Commodity Exchange Establishes Giant Food Ecosystem

Bursa Commodity Exchange is launching the Bursa Food Specialized Organized Industrial Zone and Karapınar projects, which will integrate the city's agricultural and food industry potential with global markets.

Strategic Agricultural Move in Bursa

Bursa Commodity Exchange is implementing two major macro projects to carry the city's agricultural production and industrial potential to global markets. The Bursa Food Specialized Organized Industrial Zone, which aims to bring together all supply chain links from producer to exporter under one roof, and the Karapınar Project, which will create a new center of attraction in the east of the city, are progressing rapidly. Özer Matlı, Chairman of the Bursa Commodity Exchange, stated that the project is a further stage of institutional capacity and made the following assessment:

"The Bursa Food Specialized OIZ is a new and more advanced stage of the steps Bursa Commodity Exchange has taken in agriculture and food for years, the projects it has developed, and the institutional capacity it has created."

Thirteen Years of Institutional Infrastructure

The exchange management emphasizes that the strategic moves being implemented are not spontaneous ideas, but the result of a long-term planning process. According to Bursa Commodity Exchange data, numerous sub-projects have been launched over the past 13 years. Sharing the background of the process, Bursa Commodity Exchange Chairman Özer Matlı stated:

"Over 13 years, we have implemented many projects together. We have expanded our exchange's areas of activity and influence, from the digitalization of agricultural trade to exports, from laboratory investments to vocational training, from geographical indications to international representation. While doing all this, we have also been working on our Food Specialized OIZ and Karapınar projects for a long time, gradually maturing these two projects that will leave a lasting value for Bursa's future."

Holistic Food Ecosystem Model

The industrial zone to be established is not just an area where factories are located; it offers an integrated structure that includes processing, cold chain, R&D, and packaging. Speaking about the project, which aims to directly connect the harvest from the field with the industrialist, Bursa Commodity Exchange Chairman Özer Matlı explained his goals:

"We are not just trying to create factory areas here. We are establishing a food ecosystem where the efforts of the producer, industrialist, merchant, exporter, logistics, technology, and knowledge feed each other within the same system. We are working on a holistic structure that will ensure the processing, branding, and global market access of the labor that begins in the field."

Logistical Advantages of the Eastern Axis

The eastern axis of the city chosen for the OIZ promises a structure directly integrated with rich agricultural basins, storage areas, and multimodal transportation links. The proximity of the region to railway, sea, air, and road networks offers global distribution opportunities. Expressing the regional vision and targeted stages, Bursa Commodity Exchange Chairman Özer Matlı continued:

"We do not see this project solely as an industrial zone that meets the current needs of businesses in Bursa. In the first phase, we want to bring together the agricultural production and food industry in and around Bursa within a strong system, and in subsequent phases, to create a center that can provide production, trade, technology, logistics, and export services to our region and nearby geography. This is the fundamental vision of Bursa Commodity Exchange in this project."

Three Years of Sectoral Planning

Bursa Commodity Exchange statements highlight that investments in the region are determined by the direct demands of the sector from the field. Bursa Commodity Exchange Chairman Özer Matlı stated that the project took shape after approximately three years of analysis and consultations, summarizing the demands from the field:

"We did not present the project first and then look for the sector. On the contrary, we listened to our sector, analyzed the needs, and evaluated the growth expectations of our companies. The Food Specialized OIZ is a project we have been working on for a long time, matured with the demands of the sector. Our aim is to bring the right investment together with the right production, infrastructure, technology, logistics, and market opportunities."
