Farmgate Prices Plummet While Retail Tags Soar

Despite production capacity across Turkey, the price gap between the farm and the table is widening, bringing the need for transparency in TurkStat data back to the forefront.

The Farm-to-Table Price Chasm

Extensive agricultural lands across Turkey and intensive greenhouse operations in regions like Antalya indicate a robust production capacity. However, the persistently high prices of agricultural products in major cities bring market dynamics into question. Periodically extremely low farmgate and greenhouse exit prices lead to produce being left to rot in the fields. The disrupted balance between production and the process of reaching the consumer causes retail selling prices to rise significantly.

TurkStat Data and Wholesale Prices

The official dimension of the price difference between producer and consumer is tracked in data shared by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat). Although TurkStat does not publicly share the direct item prices within the scope of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), it regularly publishes wholesale prices of agricultural products. When market and supermarket shelf tags are compared with the farmer's selling prices, the enormous profit margins and intermediary shares formed between the links of the chain become concretely evident.

Need for Transparent Data and Calls

The transparency of official statistics is critically important for a healthy analysis of price imbalances in the market and to prevent speculation. Re-disclosing item prices within the CPI to the public will unequivocally reveal the gap between wholesale and retail prices. Constructive steps are needed in data sharing to protect the rights of producers in agricultural markets and to facilitate consumers' access to affordable food.
