Purchase prices for the geographically indicated Bursa Black fig have fallen to 80 TL, with buyer firms halting purchases, leaving domestically available produce unsold.
Sharp Price Drop for Bursa Black Figs
Producers of Bursa's world-renowned, geographically indicated Bursa Black fig are facing a severe price crisis. The purchase price for the registered black fig, which sold for 190-200 TL per kilogram last year and started the new season at 130 TL, has rapidly fallen to the 80 TL range. This sudden drop in the product, which is even exported to the British Royal Family's tables, and the complete halt of purchases by some buyer firms have led to producer backlash.
Produce Not Exported Remains Unsold
While the yield and productivity in orchards have been high due to favorable weather conditions, farmers looking to sell their produce in the domestic market are struggling to find buyers. Producer Ahmet Faruk Çabuk stated that harvested produce is sent to the European market through exporting firms, but the remaining figs are left unsold. Producers, who have lowered the crate price in markets to as low as 50 TL, cannot sell their figs due to insufficient demand.
